"Camille Claudel [1864-1943] was a brilliant French sculptor who was also Rodin's muse, collaborator, model and lover. Because of her eccentricity she suffered a terrible fate in that her family committed her to a psychiatric institution for the last thirty years of her life. This portrait is a companion piece to that of 'Rodin'. Great emotion arises in me when I think of her life story. I felt I breathed in her soul as I painted her larger than life, in blues, expressing her feelings of desperation, depression and the madness of those around her."
